What will you do all day in retirement?
- Try not to retire abruptly. Work part-time for a while, either for your current employer or at another business or even try a new position altogether. Moving into retirement gradually will make the transition smoother.
- Make an effort to meet other like-minded people. Look around your city and see where groups gather and see how to join them. Consider volunteering your time or joining a senior center, coffee group or civic organization in your area.
- Check out interesting volunteer opportunities at schools, senior centers, museums, children’s groups, nursing homes, hospitals, meals-on-wheels, theaters, and libraries. Many nonprofits and community organizations could probably use your help. Check them out and let them know what skills you have and what you can offer them. You have valuable skills; market them like you would for a job.
- Expand your horizons: Take a class, read new books, join a book club, go to lectures, watch how-to TV shows on cooking, fix-it projects, gardening, and more. Check out your local senior centers and take a dancing, painting or exercise class. Read the local papers for lots of ideas in the weekly calendar. Brush up on your computer skills or take a class to learn computers at your local library or adult education program in your area. The computer has all kinds of information available on things to do and places to go.
- Do you like sports? There is room in retirement for active sports. Or consider assisting or coaching others, like children’s sports programs. Try something new like bocce. Even being a ticket taker at a sporting event can keep you in the game.
- Plan trips with your grandchildren. Young ones love being in new places and older ones can be delightful companions. You have a lot to offer, and who knows? They may even be able to teach you a thing or two, like how to program your cell phone!
Don’t forget to apply for a senior discount card for public transportation to make trips for many of these suggestions very affordable.
